A noun clause is a clause that function as a noun, because the noun function as a noun, it used in a sentence as an object of verb. Karena menduduki kedudukan sebagai noun maka bisa sebagai subject atau sebagai object kata kerja atau object dari preposition (kata depan).
e.g.
1.  I know when he will arrive (noun clause sebagai object dari verb)
2.  I am concerned about when he will arrive (noun clause sbg object of prep.)
3.  When he will arrive is not important (noun clause sebagai subject kalimat)

Pada kalimat pertama, ada 2 klausa i know dan he will arrive menggunakan connector when dan mengubah clause he will arrive menjadi sebuah noun clause. Kalimat ke dua, juga ada 2 klausa I am concerned about dan he will arrive menggunakan connector when yang mengubah clause he will arrive menjadinoun clause yang berfungsi sebagai object dari preposition about.  Kalimat ke tiga, juga ada 2 klausa dengan subject : when he will arrive (he sebagai subject dan will arrive sebagai verb dari klausa he will arrive); connector : when; sementara verb dari kalimat adalah is.

Contoh dalam soal :

d. because
kalimat diatas terdapat dua verb yaitu was dan caused, setiap verb membutuhkan subject.  Maka kalimat diatas memerlukan 2 subject, kita mulai eliminasi jawaban d. because karena bukan subject, jawaban b dan c hanya satu subject, sehingga paling tepat adalah jawaban a. that he, he merupakan subject dari was, dan that merupakan connector yang menjadikan klausa he was late menjadi subject dari verb caused.

Beberapa contoh soal :
– When the season starts is determined by the weather (correct)
– Why the condition of the patient deteriorated so rapidly it was not explained. (incorrect)

Pada contoh pertama kalimat sudah tepat karena terdapat subject dan verb dengan penggunaan noun clause connector juga benar, pada contoh kedua terdapat kelebihan subject it.
